(BPT) - Twelve-year-old Lucas has always loved everything connected with aviation — and learning more about planes is one of the things that keeps him feeling strong and joyful, even when he is dealing with the daily challenges of having congenital heart disease. This chronic health condition affects the way his blood flows through his heart and blood vessels, which can lead to fatigue, difficulty breathing and other serious symptoms that negatively impact his everyday life.

"When I was twelve or so weeks pregnant, we got the news that Lucas' heart was different, which was tough news to learn," said his mom, Stephanie. "But we've had a couple surgeries, and now we're at a stage where he looks and acts pretty much like any other kid."

And when Lucas learned that he would be able to have a wish granted by Make-A-Wish^® — which has a mission to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses — Lucas knew just what he wanted right away. His wish was to have an A380 plane experience. The A380 is Lucas' favorite kind of airplane, and he already knows a lot about this type of plane, among many others. Lucas shared that he would love to see the landing gear, the cockpit, where the flight attendants sleep, and to learn anything and everything there is to know about the A380.

Thankfully, Make-A-Wish has had a longstanding national partnership with United Airlines over the years, which would make fulfilling his wish possible. Because over 80% of the wishes from children in Make-A-Wish involve some form of travel, airfare costs are the greatest expense on fulfilling their wishes. In fact, Make-A-Wish would need over 2.8 billion miles to cover every travel wish each year. It is imperative for Make-A-Wish to have generous corporate partners like United Airlines to help make wishes like Lucas' come true.

"Lucas' wish was absolutely amazing. It was a great day, exhausting. But it was awesome to do all the things," said Stephanie. "It was fun to have Make-A-Wish involved for familiar faces, and we didn't realize there were so many jobs outside of the pilot that you can work in the airport. This was more than we could have dreamed of."

Too good to be true? It probably is! If an offer seems unbelievable or over-the-top, it may be a scam. Fraudsters might dangle promises of guaranteed wealth or pretend to be a friend or loved one in urgent need. Consider whether a message could really be true and verify its legitimacy.

Don't get swept up in pressure tactics: Scammers thrive on panic, pushing fake emergencies or "limited-time" deals to make you act fast. Pause, take a breath and consult a trusted source before making any decisions. Be wary of urgent requests for money — especially if they involve gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency. If you haven't met in person, or if you are not sure, don't send funds!

Turn on transaction alerts to get notified of unusual activity. Regularly review financial statements and report anything unfamiliar. Identity thieves may open fraudulent accounts in your name. (BPT) - A María, una comunicadora de profesión, las palabras siempre le han fluido fácilmente. Hasta que le llegaron los diagnósticos de dos enfermedades renales raras y diferentes que la dejaron sin habla.

Si bien muchas personas conocen la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC), pocas han oído hablar de las enfermedades renales raras (ERR). María vive con dos formas diferentes de ERR: nefropatía por IgA (IgAN) y glomeruloesclerosis focal y segmentaria (FSGS). La IgAN, una de las formas más comunes de ERR, causa inflamación en los riñones, dañando su funcionamiento con el paso del tiempo. Por su parte, la FSGS se caracteriza por la aparición de cicatrices en los riñones. Y ambas pueden provocar insuficiencia renal en el momento de mayor plenitud, energía y vitalidad de la vida.

Se estima que en los Estados Unidos, entre 60 y 80 de cada 100.000 personas viven actualmente con ERR. Con frecuencia, las mismas se diagnostican cuando las personas son más jóvenes y pueden progresar más rápido en comparación con otras formas de enfermedad renal. De hecho, mientras que las personas con ERR representan menos del 5-10% de las personas con enfermedad renal, las que viven con ERR representan más del 30% de las que tienen insuficiencia renal. Como resultado, las personas que viven con ERR enfrentan desafíos únicos al transitar por la vida con una enfermedad rara. A menudo, debido a la escasa concienciación pública, las personas que viven con ERR confrontan dificultades para explicar su enfermedad a los demás.

Un cambio en la vida cotidiana

Este fue el caso de María, cuyas ERR causaron muchos cambios en su vida en Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Antes de su diagnóstico a los 30 años, era bastante activa, equilibraba un trabajo estresante con la crianza de su familia, participaba en actividades sociales y disfrutaba de los viajes. Pero después de sus diagnósticos, no se sentía lo suficientemente bien ni tenía la energía para seguir ese ritmo, lo cual tuvo en ella un gran impacto mental y emocional.

María se sintió sola, incomprendida y preocupada. ¿Sus ERR le provocarían insuficiencia renal? ¿Cómo podría ser capaz de ayudar a sus hijos y su familia? ¿Sería una carga para los demás?

Debido a que su apariencia física de María no cambió, muchos de quienes la rodeaban no entendían el impacto que las ERR tenían en su vida cotidiana. "Lamentablemente, si las personas no notan un cambio físico diferente, no entienden que tienes una afección crónica", explica.

En la actualidad, María cuenta con personas que la están ayudando a disfrutar la vida al máximo, descubriendo que "es importante rodearse de personas positivas" para crear el mejor ambiente en una vida con ERR.

Sólido sistema de apoyo

La familia de María es su mayor y mas importante fuente de fortaleza. Su madre y su esposo son dos de sus principales pilares de apoyo, pero tiene además una red de amigos que la impulsan a cumplir sus metas y cifrar esperanzas en el futuro. El recuerdo de su padre, fallecido hace años, todavía le da fuerzas, pues eligió vivir la vida con intensidad y alegría.

Los hijos de María son su mayor motivación para mantenerse activa y priorizar su salud. "Quiero ser un ejemplo de perseverancia para ellos, de que nunca podemos rendirnos. Tenemos que sacar fuerzas y seguir adelante en la vida", asegura María.

Además, María encuentra camaradería y comunidad en otras personas que viven con ERR. "La conexión con personas que están pasando por lo mismo que yo es importante", asegura. "Aunque somos pocos, saber que no soy la única me da la confianza para desahogarme y hacer preguntas". Y así fue como se sintió más cómoda hablando de sus condiciones raras en los riñones, y se inspiró para compartir su experiencia de vivir con ERR.

Encontrar de nuevo su voz

Cuando María se enteró de que la existencia de una campaña cuyo objetivo es aumentar la conciencia sobre las ERR a través del poder de la narración de historias, sintió que había encontrado la oportunidad perfecta para contar su experiencia de vivir con FSGS y IgAN. A través de RKD & Me, campaña conjunta de Nephropathy Foundation, NephCure y Travere Therapeutics, escribió una potente carta a "su yo más joven", donde narra los obstáculos que enfrentó al vivir con ERR, así como la fuerza que encontró a lo largo de ese camino.

María espera que al compartir el profundo impacto que han tenido las ERR en su vida, ayude a otra persona que vive con ERR. "Poder contar mi historia puede ayudar a alguien que lo necesite o que necesite palabras de aliento", afirma.
